International Day of Yoga is celebrated annually on 21 June at the summer solstice.
Yoga is a great form of exercise for people who are looking to stay in shape with a low-impact activity. This makes it an ideal accompaniment to dance training and, in fact, many teachers at Pineapple are also qualified yoga practitioners.
The discipline of learning yoga poses makes it a natural partner class for ballet students, while the Yoga Dance Fusion class (Thursdays, – AM BST) incorporates elments of Tai Chi, Contemporary dance, Pilates & Yoga. The lyrical flow style of this class will appeal to those who enjoy holistic classes as well as ex-dancers.
Classes at Pineapple which incorporate yoga discipline include Strength and stretch with Dance (Amber Rose), Yoga Dance Fusion (David Olton), Ballet: Barre and stretch (Alex Turner), Strength and stretch Ballet (Kim Mendez), Ballet conditioning and strength (Ruth Howard Jones), and Street: HIIT The Dancefloor (Chloe May).
Yoga is beneficial for physical and mental wellbeing
You will find that many of your pre- and post-class warming sessions at Pineapple incorporate some of the ancient principles of yoga discipline.
According to the NHS website, there's some evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains – including lower back pain – depression and stress. Yoga also counts as a strengthening exercise, and at least 2 sessions a week will help you meet the guidelines on muscle-strengthening activities. And if you can't get to Covent Garden, you can do this all from the comfort of your home thanks to the Pineapple LIVE App!
Can kids do Yoga?
According to Unicef Kid Power, children can practice many yoga poses without any risk and get the same benefits that adults do. These benefits include increased flexibility and fitness, mindfulness and relaxation.
Of course, not all yoga poses are ideal for children. Like adults, they need to master the basics before moving on to more advanced stretches, but there is a special list of yoga poses for kids that you can try at home to get them involved!
The Yoga Poses for Kids page on the Unicef Kid Power website gives a list with detailed explanations of yoga poses for children. The list includes such fun names as 'Child's Pose' and 'Happy Baby'. According to the website, the 'Happy Baby' pose is 'sure to get a few gurgles, even from parents!'
Trained dancer and professional yoga practitioner Aina Wethal taught a free yoga class at The Yards in Covent Garden, aptly called an urban oasis, opposite Pineapple on the last pre-Covid International Day of Yoga in 2019.
